Texas bill would allow blind hunters to use laser sights

Edmund Kuempel has proposed a bill to the Texas legislature that would allow people that are legally blind to hunt with the aid of a laser sight. Currently it is illegal to use a laser sight to hunt.

The legal issue isn’t a blind person with a gun, it’s the laser sight. Laser sights, spot lights, and headlights are banned from use in hunting in Texas because they tend to make the animal stand still.

Blind hunters typically have a guide help them to aim their gun – “1 inch higher, 2 inches to the left” sort of thing.

  1. There is a big difference between “blind” and “Legally blind” A “blind” person cannot see. A “legally blind” person can often see, but has limitations. My granddaughter, for example, is “legally blind” but you would never guess by seeing her. She sees perfectly well straight ahead, but has tunnel vision. She has very poor peripheral vision and cannot drive because of that.
