Arrested for being drunk in a bar
Ron White (’they call me tater salad‘) did a joke about this. He was arrested outside of a bar for being drunk in public after being thrown out of the bar. His argument was that he was drunk in private and thrown in public.
Now, San Antonio police are going a step farther. They are arresting bar patrons who are drunk in the bar for being drunk in public.
Says Carolyn Beck of the TABC, “Being in a bar does not exempt one from the state laws against public drunkenness.”
The goal is to try and cut down on drunk drivers by catching them before they get in the car and drive. Why don’t they just camp out outside the bar and arrest them on their way to the car? Then they truly would be drunk in public. My understanding is that a bar is a private place.
That said I agree with almost anything to cut down on drunk driving, but this seems to be overstepping.
