RIAA suing 83-year-old dead woman
Gertrude Walton is the latest victim of the RIAA in their quest to catch music pirates. Sure, everyone has an excuse when the RIAA knocks on their door; but Ms. Walton has a really, really good one. She died last December.
Ms. Walton has been accused by a group of record companies of making more than 700 songs available for download using the screen name ’smittenedkitten’. Walton is listed as the sole defendant in the case.
According to Walton’s daughter, Robin Chianumba, her mother objected to having a computer in the house. “My mother was computer illeterate. She hated a computer, my mother wouldn’t know how to turn on a computer.” Chianumba continues, “I believe that if music companies are going to set examples they need to do it to appropriate people and not dead people. I am pretty sure she is not going to leave Greenwood Memorial Park to attend the hearing.”
Through a spokesperson, the RIAA now feels that Walton was probably not the ’smittenedkitten’ they were after and “will now, of course, obviously dismiss the case.”
