Kids - clean up after yourselves

In what could be the worst budget cut ever for a school, Three Rivers School in Sunriver, Oregon, elementary students are being forced to clean the rooms after janitors come under the budget knife. So, instead of reading, writing, and math; it is sweep, mop, and scrub.

The students spend 15 to 20 minutes of each day cleaning; time which should be used for education. With the battle cry, “cleaning up is an important part of learning”, kids are learning about responsibility; at least, they are according to district officials.

The district sent a newsletter home November 4 explaining the situation to parents and giving them the opportunity to exclude their children if so requested. No parent has objected. In fact, one third grade parent mentioned that she was happy to see her child taking responsibility for his school.

Most importantly, kids are not allowed to take part in the cleaning until their schoolwork is done for the day. And, bathroom cleaning is still left to the janitors.
