Would you like a condom with your liquor? It’s free!
The Indian state of Andhra Pradesh recently enacted a law requiring liquor stores to give out a free condom with every bottle of alcohol starting December 1.
The handouts are part of a campaign to warn those who drink about the dangers of unsafe sex. The state government pays for the condoms and monitors their distribution.
This seems to be a “last ditch” effort for a state with over 470,000 cases of HIV. India sits second behind South Africa in total HIV cases with 5.1 million. It is feared that India may overtake South Africa due to lack of knowledge.
As every high school health student should be able to tell you: there is no “safe sex”. Maybe instead of giving out condoms, the government should be printing flyers explaining the dangers of sex. But, I guess you’ve got to start somewhere; and this is better than nothing. At least it may cut back on the numbers.
