Don’t use “monster” anywhere, you might get sued

Monster Cable Products has recently been working hard to protect its name. They’re suing everybody that uses monster.

You’d think that Disney would be pretty well protected against lawsuits. But, they were sued by Monster Cable Products for the movie title Monsters, Inc. Other noteables: Monster Slots, Monster Energy Drink, The Chicago Bears for their nickname “Monsters of the Midway”, the Discovery Channel for their show Monster Garage, and a small used clothing store - MonsterVintage.com.

Victor Petrucci, founder of MonsterVintage.com, claims that “they [Monster Cable Products] strong-arm anybody who uses the word ‘monster’.” He continues, “I sell used clothing. How can I damage them at all?”

Petrucci drew national attention when he put up a protest sign outside the parking lot of a 49ers game shortly after Monster Cable bought naming rights to Candlestick Park.

This is just about as bad as Microsoft trying to copyright ‘windows’. Monster is a fairly generic word and shouldn’t be able to be copyrighted.
